Tips on Studying for Tests and Quizzes
Your overall GPA is a significant component of your college application, and your tests, throughout the school year, make up a substantial chunk of that number. While no one revels in studying, there are some simple steps you can take to make the process less stressful and more efficient.
Make a Schedule
Just like your sports team, extracurricular activities and tutoring program, your study regimen is important enough to warrant its own schedule. Be sure to set it up as early in the semester as possible, giving yourself enough time to space out your study sessions to avoid burnout. The most important part of your schedule? Sticking to it!
If your locker is a jungle of papers and textbooks, it’s time to get everything in its right place. Separate study materials by subject and remember to gather everything you have for each class – notes, books, graded quizzes and study guides. Organizing them into discreet groups will make studying more streamlined and less of a hassle.
Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help
Reviewing key concepts and they’re still not making sense? Maybe it’s the time to ask for help. Ideally, you’ve formed a study group with classmates, but if not, don’t be afraid to make an appointment to speak with your teacher. He or she will likely be happy to sit down and review material with you with enough notice.
Amidst all of your studying, be sure that you’re taking time for yourself – even if you have to pencil that time into your calendar! Eat and sleep well, spend time with your friends, and indulge in hobbies you love. Spending all your waking hours studying is a recipe for exhaustion. Getting good grades is important, but not as important as your well-being.
