College Admissions Timeline: What to Do Your Senior Year

By the time you start your senior year of high school, you may be feeling a desire to coast. You’ve spent three years studying, volunteering and researching colleges. Now, you want to sit back and enjoy your year at the top of the high school food chain. Not so fast!

Senior Year

Your senior year should definitely be a time of celebration. You’ll enjoy senior events, prom and graduation. But don’t forget that your hard work will all be for naught if you don’t finish strong. This year is the perfect time to find a tutor and pour all your energy into exam preparation.

Here’s a breakdown of what else to do to ensure your senior year is the best one yet.

Fall of Senior Year

By the fall of your senior year, you should be polishing those admissions essays. Ask your parents and teachers to read them and provide feedback. Also, be sure you’re staying organized about the early admission and admission deadlines for your top college choices. Ask teachers, coaches or employers for recommendation letters at least two months in advance so that they have time to write you a glowing letter of support. Meet with ACT and SAT prep tutors often to ensure you’re as ready as you can be for the big day.

Spring of Senior Year

During the last semester of your high school career, you will begin receiving acceptance letters from your top colleges! Research their financial aid and assistance options, and submit your FAFSA. Visit schools that accepted you one last time to make the best decision. Finish the school year strong by maintaining good grades. Finally, take some time to celebrate your accomplishments!
