Dragon Babies: Lucky or Wishful Thinking?
January 23 marks the start of the Year of the Black Dragon in Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese astrology, an auspicious year which comes just once every 60 years. In these cultures, the dragon is considered a symbol of power, traditionally associated with royalty, and so the Year of the Dragon is considered a particularly influential year.
Across Asia, from Hong Kong to Seoul to Singapore, couples are changing their future plans in hopes of delivering a Dragon baby. According to China’s state-run Xinhua news agency, the country expects a 5% increase in births this year. Officials in Singapore say that they have seen rises of 10% or more in Dragon years. In fact, the spike in births can be felt even in the U.S., with hospitals in Queens reporting a rise in births last time the Year of the Dragon came around. Continue reading
Neither Rain, nor Sleet, nor Snow…Standardized Tests Still Go On

Natural disasters and NCAA scandals cannot deter the fact that your child will still need to take the SAT's and ACT's.
We’ve gone from a media storm surrounding the University of Miami Hurricanes to extensive coverage of Hurricane Irene. Though many of you may still be coping with floods and wind damage, time marches on and your child’s registration deadlines and test dates grow ever nearer.
When we speak of test dates, most students and parents immediately think of the SAT and the ACT (see our SAT and ACT mythbusters here)– but both of these tests are part of testing systems developed by the College Board and ACT, Inc. College Board has created a line of exams that includes ReadiStep, the PSAT, and the SAT, while ACT, Inc.’s line includes Explore, PLAN, and the ACT. Test dates for all of these exams generally fall in October, so the time to prepare is now. Read on to learn more about these two lines of testing. Continue reading

Under Pressure

The National Women's team of Japan pulled off a huge upset against the US Women's team in the 2011 Women's World Cup in Germany.
The 2011 Women’s World Cup was heralded as one of the most exciting sporting events in history – and rightfully so. After all, the event had everything: close games, passionate players, headers, shootouts, and behind it all, a tsunami. But the real reason that the Women’s World Cup has become such an exciting event is the fact that more and more countries are putting effort into developing strong women’s sporting programs, creating unprecedented parity between Western countries in which women’s sports are firmly established and other nations in which athletes are traditionally male.
On Sunday, the Japanese women’s soccer team defeated the U.S. team in a dramatic final match that was decided in a shootout. The Japanese team is undeniably talented, but Americans Abby Wambach, Hope Solo, and others are also incredibly talented athletes – so what pushed Japan over the edge? Continue reading
